Near the end of the video it shows Sunny Swanson's yellow road side stand where we use to buy the finest sweet corn in Michigan. The memories of this wonderful farmer will stay with us forever. When you click on this first video, the tour will come up and there are additional tours from the Conservancy at the end.. Please start with this main tour, and then you can go on to the others. You will find yourself relaxing and feeling just wonderful. What a beautiful world here in Leelanau!

NETFLIX:
SHE DONE HIM WRONG Mae West and Cary Grant in 1933 saucy, naughty comedy before censorship started. Ms. West plays a cabaret singer who juggles lots of men including a young gorgeous Cary. This is a classic comedy of the 1930’s 4 out of 5 stars.

BOARDING HOUSE BLUES stars Moms (Jackie) Mabley. Moms was one of the best comedians that ever lived. Funny beyond anything you have heard lately from any woman. As a black comedian in the 40’s and 50’s she had to climb a tall ladder to success. Believe me; everyone thought she was a stitch. She could get away with so many things that no one else dared do during that time period. I really remember her in the 60’s when she was older. She was a regular on Johnny Carson’s Show. Moms make this film into a vaudeville show, so they could highlight lots of talent. You will have fun with this. 3 out of 5 stars. By the way, HBO is doing a whole show about Moms this year. It was a big hit at the Toronto Film Festival and Tribeca Festival in New York. Look out for that bombshell program.

56 UP. Since 1964 director Michael Apted has filmed this documentary about a group of Brits since they were 7 years old. Every 7 years he does a new documentary following each of them and discussing how their lives are proceeding. These documentaries are considered some of the most brilliant and interesting of all time. 4 out of 5 stars for me.

THE ENGLISH TEACHER WITH JULIANNE MOORE Moore is excellent as a middle age teacher looking for love and excitement in her quiet life. This film was one of the audience favorite films during the TCFF. 3.5 out of 5.

 Recipe for October Fun Parties:

From Giada De laurentiis Spiced Pumpkin-Raisin Cookies

Ingredients: 1 cup all-purpose flour, 2/3 cup old-fashioned oats, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ t baking soda, ½ t fine salt, ¼ t ground allspice, ¾ cup raw sugar plus more for sprinkling, ½ cup canned pumpkin puree, 1/3 c vegetable oil, 1 T pure maple syrup, 1 t vanilla extract, ½ c raisins or dried cherries whatever you have on hand. Directions: Put oven rack in the center of the oven and pre heat to 350 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. In medium bowl, combine flour, oats, cinnamon, baking soda, salt and allspice. Stir and blend well. In large bowl combine the sugar, pumpkin puree, oil, syrup, and vanilla and Wisk to blend. Using a flexible spatula, gradually stir the dry ingredients into the pumpkin mixture. Then stir in the raisins or cherries. For each cookie, drop 1 generous Tablespoon of batter onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing the mounds 1 inch apart( or use a min ice cream scoop) Using moistened fingertips, flatten each mound to a 2 inch diameter round. Sprinkle each cookie with a bit of raw sugar. Bake them until brown and a bit firm to the touch, 17 to 29 minutes. But do not overcook them. Using a metal spatula, transfer the cookies to a rack and cool completely.

KON TIKI (OCT 6-8) This Norwegian film center character is Thor Heyerdahl who proved that the Peruvian natives could successfully take a balsa wood raft 5000 miles to the Polynesian Islands. He had 6 men on that raft. This is a true story and one of the best adventure stories you ever saw. I saw it during the TCFF on the big screen and it blew me away. I was so thrilled with the entire film it brought tears to my eyes. The photography, the sound, the script, the actors, everything was superb! Be sure and get to The Bay in Suttons Bay when this arrives. 5 out of 5

August 2013:  Northport Connection

The owners broke ground FOR A NEW BOWLING ALLEY in Northport (the only one in Leelanau County). A new golf course is under construction and will open in 2014. Northport Brewing is trying to open this summer. The Depot is being remodeled, but we do not know what is planned for that space. There's LuLu's and Garage Restaurant going full swing. North End and Barb's Bakery are always wonderful. NORTHPORT RENAISSANCE IS HAPPENING! Leelanau County is just magnificent. The cherries, apples, peaches and the grapes are growing very well in this normal Northern Michigan climate. The lakes are pristine, clean and gorgeous so you can dip your toes in their beauty. See you soon.

STATE THEATRE - TRAVERSE CITY FILM FESTIVAL
I am sponsoring DANCING GIRL at the State on Saturday August 3rd at 9:00AM
A South Korean romantic comedy follows a housewife who puts her lifelong fantasy on hold becoming a pop star to raise her child while her husband builds his career as a lawyer. Fate is on her side and a chance encounter gives her an opportunity to relive her childhood dream late in life by auditioning for an American Idol-style show.

Looking forward to the 9th TCFF, 150 films, panels, classes and the new Bijou By The Bay theatre. We stopped by during construction to visit with General Contractor, Thom Darga, and had a fun visit. It was all about last minute stress getting the C of O and keeping everything perfect. It is looking wonderful and it will be even better when we raise enough money to have a new sparkling brilliantly lit marque over the Bijou (just like the State Theatre sign)

This lady cop story was my comedy fix of the summer. Bullock is the FBI agent and McCarthy is the local cop who knows her neighborhood. This film just takes you away.

Limited size of choices but what you get is terrific. A fantastic pastrami sandwich. He cures the meat himself. This is a very small restaurant and if you are looking for a Bubba style place for burgers this is not it. Everything is good plus great coffee au lait. (MY GREER GARSON RETROSPECTIVE)
I thought Mrs. Miniver and Random Harvest were her best.
RANDOM HARVEST stars Greer Garson and Ronald Coleman. Story is about a WWI wounded soldier that has no memory. He meets Paula and marries her. Then he is hit by a car, and regains his memory of his life before Paula with his wealthy family. He returns to his family and a desperate Paula becomes his secretary to be near him. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
MRS. MINIVER stars Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. This 1942 movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture. William Wyler directed this film about an English family and their lives living through the hardships of WW2 in England. This is a 5 out of 5 star movie.

PARENTAL GUIDANCE I love these two comedy stars Billy Crystal and Bette Midler. Artie and Deane agree to look after their three grandchildren when their Type A helicopter parents have to go on a business trip. The kids are obsessed with everything internet and texting all the time. Grandma and Grandpa decide to bring some good old fashioned parental guidance to their lives. Family movie and you might recognize some of the problems. 3.5 stars out 5 stars.

Recipe: Famous Italian Chef, Lidia Bastianich's, recipe for ZITI WITH SAUSAGE,ONIONS AND FENNEL

If you have never used fennel before, this is the recipe to use.
     Salt the pasta water
     1 lb of ziti pasta
     1 lb sweet Italian sausage
1 large fennel bulb about one pound with fronds attached
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
2 medium yellow onions, cut in half moon slices
     1/2 t salt
     1/2 t red pepper flakes
     1/2 cup tomato paste
3 cups of chopped fennel fronds
1 cup freshly grated pecorino, grana or paemigiano cheese
Heat the salted water to boiling. Put in pasta and bring it back to boiling and cook until not quite al dente. Keep 3 cups of pasta water and drain the rest.while the pasta is cooking take the sausage out of the casing and break up the meat . Trim the fennel bulb, removing tough outer shell and reserve the fronds. Slice the bulb in half lengthwise, remove the core then slice each half in quarter inch thick lengthwise slices. Slice the pieces into 2 inch match sticks. Heat the olive oil in skillet set over medium high heat. Add sausage meat and cook until it begins to brown and you have separated the pieces about 1 1/2 minutes .Remove sausage to a bowl and put onions in skillet and cook until wilted another 2 minutes or so. Take onions and put in bowl with sausage. Then put fennel matchsticks in skillet for two minutes and saute then put back in the browned sausage and onions with the fennel in skillet and combine for one minute. Make an open spot on the skillet and add 1/4 t salt and 1/2 t red pepper flakes, toast the flakes and salt for 1/2 minute then stir in the 1/2 cup of tomato paste and stir those ingredients together for a minute then combine with the sausage, onion fennel. Ladle the reserved pasta water into the skillet, stir well, bring the liquid to a boil, reduce to simmer and cook until sauce is thickened and fennel is soft but not mushy about 6 minutes. Add more water if sauce gets too thick. Season to taste..Drop the drained ziti into the simmering sauce, toss everything, then sprinkle the chopped fennel fronds and continue to cook until the ziti are perfectly sauced. Remove from the heat, Sprinkle the grated cheese over the ziti and serve in warmed pasta bowls or plates. Enjoy!

STATE THEATRE:
Spring Break Week was a big success. Lots of great films and it was all free.

February 2013 - YEAR IS REALLY STARTING OUT GREAT!

LOTS OF GOOD CLOSINGS !

Must tell you about an amazing couple that I worked with. Young sweethearts 49 years ago. Been through everything in life together. Totally devoted. Just wonderful children, the best of America. They found me on the internet. Emailed and said they wanted a vacation home to make special summer memories with their family. Told me what they liked and I did an additional search. I found two that were so close to their ideal. They were both coming to see the houses, but at the last minute the Mrs. did not feel up to it and so she sent her husband and sons. The men took lots of pictures and they went home. The husband called me and said they would make an offer on one of the houses. He said even though my wife has not psychically seen the house, I know her taste and I truly think she will be happy. We did the inspections and then the buyers wanted to see the house one more time and of course this was the first time for the wife. They were both excited and saw the property. Sure enough, the husband really knew his wife and she was delighted. This is the first time in 20 years of real estate that a husband and wife were both on the same wave-length and totally had confidence in each other. It was an awesome experience for me.. I will never forget it!

Eric, the chef, buys as much fresh local food as possible. He does great sauces that are really unique. I can't describe everything.. just go to the website to review the menu. You will be very happy you got there for the evening. It will be a memorable experience.

LUNCH AT HARRINGTON'S BY THE BAY 13890 S. West Bay Shore Dr. Traverse City, Mi 49684 231-421-9393
My husband, Shel ordered Ground Steak with Blu Cheese Sandwich and Truffle Fries. Great Portion, perfectly cooked. I ordered Lake Perch with fries and out came the tinest bit of perch I have ever seen served in a Leelanau County restaurant. It tasted lovely, but I called Jason the manager over and asked him why such a small portion. He said they usually count and weigh the amount of fish served. This time they only counted and the fish were unusally small. So he went back in the kitchen and brought out additional fish to make up for what was lacking, He was very accomodating and said he looked forward to our return. We will be back to try again.      RECIPE:
GREAT FOR SUPER BOWL SUNDAY OR ANY FUN GATHERING (I SERVED IT CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON.)
DRIED CHERRIES, PECAN AND ROSEMARY BRIE EN CROUTE

Ingredients: 1 egg, 1 T water 1/3 C softened dried cherries, 1/4 C chopped toasted pecans, 1/4 C honey, 1/2 t. chopped fresh rosemary plus one inch cut of rosemary sprig that looks like mini tree, 1 sheet of a 17.3 ounce package Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry Sheet Thawed 45 minutes before starting the work. 1 8 or 16 oz Round of Brie 1 package of your favorite crackers.
Pre heat oven to 400 degrees
Beat the egg and the water in a small bowl. Put aside. Stir the cherries, pecans honey and chopped rosemary in a seperate bowl and let it sit. (I did that the night before and let the cherries soak up the honey.) Put the pastry sheet on lightly floured surface. Roll the sheet out to 14 inches. Cut off the corners to make a circle (keep the corners and scraps for decorating the top.) Place the brie in the middle of the pastry sheet. Spoon the cherry mixture over it. Brush the edges of the circle with the egg mixture then fold the pastry around the cheese and cover. Brush the seam with egg mixture and place the seam down onto the baking sheet. Place the scraps into a design on the top like a leaf design and put a tiny dough ball in the center. Insert the tiny rosemary tree that you cut and put it in the ball. Brush the whole ball with the egg mixture. Bake it for 25 minutes but check it at 20 to see if it is brown. Let it sit for 45 minutes before serving with crackers. If you serve it too soon then the cheese is too soft and gets messy.

OCTOBER 2012

COLOR SEASON REALLY HAS ARRIVED. It started in earnest the third week of September. I thought it was kind of early this year. The colors are really getting bright. The corn mazes are in full swing. We have some really amazing ones that are a true challenge.

Come up for the fabulous cider and check out Tandem Cider 2055 N Settero in Suttons Bay (231-271-0050) for different kinds of hard cider, what a treat! Visit there website

Get out on the water for great fishing. Every day I see fisherman at the drop off in front of my house on North Lake Leelanau. Because the water is colder the fish are closer to the top of the lake and are hungry and biting. You have a great chance to catch a good dinner

Restaurant :
STONY POINT PUB 111 ST JOSEPH SUTTONS BAY, MI 49682 This location used to be Gusto's Italian Food. Now this is our Suttons Bay Sports Bar. I went for lunch a couple of weeks ago. We had the tater tots with cheese for an appetizer. They were good but would have liked a spicy dipping sauce too. My friend had the burger and was happy with his choice. I had the spicy pulled pork on a warm pretzel bun which was delicious! The wait staff was friendly. But it took three times asking for the katsup to finally get it for the burger. I thought that most unusual. The restaurant was not that crowded. Since this is my first time there I will give it another try. Do try the pulled pork, it was really good. No reservations needed.
